Muğla’s two famous resort towns, Fethiye and Marmaris, sit on the same coast yet offer very different vacations. In the second video of our comparison series, we put them side by side. In this guide we summarize that comparison by travel style. We also have detailed guides for both: Fethiye and Marmaris.

If you want nature and adventure: Fethiye
Fethiye’s biggest asset is its nature. The Ölüdeniz lagoon with paragliders drifting above it, Butterfly Valley reached by boat, the ice-cold Saklıkent Canyon and the abandoned Greek village of Kayaköy will fill several days. The first stages of the Lycian Way also start here.
Fethiye has other sides too: sunsets in Çalış, back-to-nature camping at Kabak Bay and guesthouses overlooking the valley in Faralya.
If you want coves, boats and nightlife: Marmaris
Central Marmaris has a marina, a castle and a bustling bazaar. At night, Bar Street stays lively until dawn. But it would be unfair to equate Marmaris only with partying: the nearby Bozburun and Datça peninsulas are home to some of the quietest and most beautiful coves in Türkiye. Daily boat tours are Marmaris’s most popular activity.
For a family vacation
Both are family-friendly:
- Fethiye: The calm, shallow water of the Ölüdeniz lagoon and the long beach at Çalış.
- Marmaris: İçmeler’s sheltered bay and the family hotels along the shore.
If you want a quiet vacation, choose villages a little outside the center in either area.
Budget-wise
Both places offer a wide range of accommodation, from guesthouses to all-inclusive resorts. Prices vary widely with season, location and type of property. July and August are the most expensive; June and September are both cheaper and calmer.
Getting there
Both areas are reachable via Dalaman Airport; Marmaris is also a reasonable distance from Milas-Bodrum Airport. A rental car gives you great freedom to explore coves and villages. Combining both in one vacation is also possible; they’re a few hours apart by road.
Verdict: Which one is for you?
- Nature, hiking, adventure → Fethiye
- Boat tours, coves, lively nights → Marmaris
- A quiet village vacation → Faralya/Kabak near Fethiye or Bozburun/Selimiye near Marmaris
- Can’t decide? → Combine them: 4 nights in Fethiye, 3 nights in Marmaris.
For tour options: Fethiye tours and Muğla tours.
