Among the towns along the northern shore of the Gulf of Edremit, Altınoluk holds a special place: this is where the Kaz Mountains come closest to the sea, with pine and olive trees reaching almost to the beach. In our video we covered Altınoluk from its location and beaches to its food and sights. This article pulls together the video’s insider tips in a form you can use for your vacation plans.

Getting to know Altınoluk

Altınoluk is a seaside town in the Edremit district of Balıkesir province on Türkiye’s northern Aegean coast. To the west, toward the Çanakkale border, lies Küçükkuyu; to the east, gulf towns such as Güre, Akçay and Ören. The town consists of a long shoreline and neighborhoods climbing the mountain slopes behind it.

What sets Altınoluk apart from the other gulf towns is how short the distance is between mountain and sea. While swimming, you can turn your head and see green slopes; in the evening, a cool breeze off the mountain makes summer nights pleasant. A long-time favorite with Turkish summer-home owners, the town gets busy in season, but without the noise of big resorts.

Getting to Altınoluk

As we note in the video description, the easiest way is to fly in and rent a car:

  • Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport (Edremit): The nearest airport to Altınoluk, about an hour and fifteen minutes by road.
  • Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport: More flight options; about two hours and fifteen minutes by road to Altınoluk.

To compare flights: flights to Edremit and Izmir.

If you prefer the bus, there are services from major Turkish cities to Edremit and Altınoluk, and dolmuş minibuses run between the gulf towns. With your own car, you can tour the entire gulf along the coastal road from Küçükkuyu to Akçay in a single day.

Where to stay

Altınoluk has a wide variety of accommodation, from large hotels to boutique guesthouses and from apartments to campsites, so there’s something for every budget:

  • The waterfront and center: Walking distance to the beach, restaurants and promenade. The liveliest area.
  • The slopes: A bit farther from the sea but with gulf views and quieter nights.
  • Kaz Mountain villages: Stone houses surrounded by nature and a completely different atmosphere. Be prepared to drive down to the sea every day.

To compare options: hotels in Altınoluk.

Where to swim

Altınoluk’s shoreline is long and mostly a mix of pebbles and sand. Along the coast, public beaches alternate with sections where hotels and beach clubs rent out loungers. The farther you go from the center, the quieter it gets.

The northern Aegean is cooler than the resort areas farther south, and cold mountain springs make it even cooler in some spots. That’s a plus in the summer heat, but if you’re planning to swim in early June, be prepared.

What to eat

Altınoluk’s table carries all the flavors of Aegean cooking: olive-oil dishes, wild greens, seafood and meze. As we mention in the video description, the region’s standout dishes include traditional favorites like kuzu tandır (slow-roasted lamb) and keşkek (a hearty wheat-and-meat stew). In the Kaz Mountain villages, you can try village breakfasts and gözleme (stuffed flatbread).

The most prized thing to buy is, of course, olive oil. There are many producers and shops along the gulf; buying from a local producer is both fresher and the better choice.

Things to see

The ancient city of Antandros

Right next to Altınoluk on the hillside, Antandros is one of the most important ancient settlements in the region. A Roman-era terrace house with wall paintings uncovered in excavations is the site’s most striking feature. Visiting conditions may vary with the excavation season, so check before you go.

Kaz Mountains National Park

The mountains behind Altınoluk are known as one of the most botanically diverse areas in Türkiye. Forest roads, streams, waterfalls and hiking trails make it ideal for a day away from the beach. Bring water, proper shoes and a map when you hike; phone signal can be weak in places.

Mountain villages

The villages on the slopes, with their stone houses, narrow lanes and village teahouses, reflect the gulf as it used to be. A village trip for breakfast or dinner can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a vacation in Altınoluk.

Neighboring towns

Short drives from Altınoluk take you to the thermal resorts of Güre, the promenade of Akçay and, on the Çanakkale side, Küçükkuyu and Adatepe. For details, see our Güre guide and Akçay guide.

When to go

July and August are the hottest months for swimming, but crowds peak then too. Late June and September are calmer and still good for the beach. Spring and fall are much better for hiking and village visits in the Kaz Mountains; in October and November you can also see the olive harvest up close.

Insider tips

  • On weekends, and especially during Turkish public holidays, traffic gets heavy on the gulf road; shift your travel to weekdays if you can.
  • For longer stays, renting an apartment or summer house can be cheaper than a hotel.
  • Plan for cool evenings when heading up into the Kaz Mountains; bring a sweater even in summer.
  • Beach clubs may charge for loungers; you can save money by choosing public beaches.

Altınoluk is one of the most balanced choices on the gulf if you want mountains and sea on the same day. Watch the video, then bring these tips along on your trip.
